Godzone

By Dean Letfus

godzone_-_2006.1144659600.pict0153I spent much of yesterday wandering the Sydney CBD taking in the people and culture.  I like Sydney for its food and its shopping especially but there were things noticeably different to New Zealand

1. The People.  I went into a supermarket here and there must have been 25 checkout operators and every one had a queue. Like I’ve never seen so many people at once in one store.  It is easy to see why retail businesses and even property do well here, there are just so many consumers.

2. The smell.  The smell of fetid cigarettes hangs in the air everywhere, you can’t get away from it.  I thought NZ’s clean green anti smoking in public policy a little Nanny State at the time, now I appreciate it.  I picked certain shops to stay in based on their not being 5 people smoking outside the front door

3. Extremes. As I said I walked most of the CBD yesterday and couldn’t help but notice the monetary extremes.

I lost count of the number of beggars and homeless, some even set up with filthy mattresses on the pavement.  Young and old me shuffling along picking up cigarette buts and finishing them of for the previous owner reminded me more of Fiji than one of the most affluent nations on earth.

Then on the other end the streets have a plethora of supercars well  dressed men and gorgeously coiffed and groomed women.  Even those the world would call “Plain Janes” have that gorgeously cared for look about them.

So maybe bigger population will always cause more extremes, kind of makes sense in a way.

So as much as I’d like to see NZ population increase to replace retiring boomers and assist the property market, I hope we never lose our “flava”
