Knowledge really is power
Posted by: | CommentsI know this is a self evident statement. If you know stuff it enables you to do stuff you couldn’t otherwise do right? But I believe this operates on 2 different levels.
There is stuff we are ignorant of that never enters our head to ask about. For example people who live from hand to mouth with their hands out constantly have probably seen that in their families and the victim mentality is seriously embedded in their psyche. So generally they never ask them selves questions like “How could I change my life” or “How do I get from here to financially free”.
So that lack of knowledge is typically societal, situational often generational.
But the other lack of knowledge is when you know something is possible or something exists but you don’t know how to get there. I was thinking about this today when I was talking with a friend in the USA who owns over 1000 properties in Phoenix.
You see I know it’s possible to have a thousand homes because he already has them. I have met others who have even more. And I have spent 3 years now immersing myself in the US market so I know a heap more than I did before. I know some of the ways that maybe I could buy more houses and have heard many of the strategies that these bigger guys use but I still don’t “know” exactly how to replicate their results. I keep asking, pushing, learning and I will eventually get there but I guess my point is that with this sort of “known yet unknown” knowledge one has to get past ones frustration and decide that I will keeep going till I crack this. I know how to buy a house a month with only one deposit so that alone is amazing but how to buy a thousand houses in 2 years? still working on that one.
We in the trade call this a lot of hard work.
And at the end of the day that is what It takes to get from where you are to where you want to go, work!

Power of Words
Posted by: | CommentsI had an amazing email over the weekend from a long time client/friend who reminded me of something I had said to her when I first met her to help with her investing journey.
She said:
“ I have never forgotten the meeting I had with you. Rather than just the good outcome you gave me in regard to my next investment property it was the impact of a passing comment you made. You suggested that by setting myself up financially I could do some short term mission work, such as in an orphanage.
You instilled a dream in me that day! I have just retired from my hospital job and am looking at going to India next year with a team from church.”
The power of words in action. I can’t tell you how amazing it felt to read her words and know I made a life changing difference in anothers world.
So remember today what you say has power, power to bless or curse, power to build up or tear down, power to change a life!!

How’s your hattitiude?
Posted by: | Comments
I had a pommy boss years ago who talked about hattitude.
It was funny at the time but in a warped way he was quite right. Our attitude quite literally sits on top of us affecting everything we see and do. Rather like a large hat.
All of us suffer circumstances that we don’t like or wish we could avoid. Goodness I have had my fair share of those in the last 4 years.
But ones hattitude determines what happens next. At my lowest ebbs I had choices:
1. Kill myself
2. Drink myself to oblivion
3. Get angry and attack those who were causing the problems
4. Find some dishonest means of solving the situation
5. Have a nervous breakdown
And all of those would come to hover over me looking for a place to land. But instead I decided to look for the good in the bad, learn all I could and find a way to rebuild again better, smarter and much wiser.
That hat stuck because I had enough years of deciding that was who I would be before the pressure came on. It’s often the hardest road but it bears the most fruit and creates the head space to enable you to keep going.
My experience has been that by being as transparent as possible and refusing to go to the negative my friends and clients have stayed with me and supported me and in turn I have been able to stand up again, serve them again and actually end up better, stronger and more in love with God, my wife, kids and life.
And that is 150% about what hat I put on and nothing to do with what was going on.
The choice is always yours!

A big thank you
Posted by: | CommentsI have been inundated with emails thanking me for getting my blogs going again. It truly is a privilege to be allowed into your hearts and minds and I can only say thank you. The last 3 years have been hard work and the last 6 months even more challenging with my health so it is inspiring and encouraging to know that I can bring either a smile or some insight or assistance to so many through my strange brain
.
I shared this on Facebook the other week and it is truly one of the funniest things I have ever seen so I thought I would share it with you here today.
Have a great day and remember……..

Life as it used to be

My computer charger died on the 13th December. By the 14th I was powerless and internetless (?) till yesterday.
After panicking about how life would continue without being online I discovered that life did indeed go on. And in fact life was a lot less busy and I had time to think, connect with people and be creative in ways that I hadn’t remembered doing since my teens.
It was quite revelatory how different I felt and thought. We really have become slaves to the machine with our laptops, ipads and smart phones.
My Xmas newsletter will now have to be my new years newsletter as I have been unable to prepare anything meaningful due to my power outage and now that I am back online I simply have too many people to talk to this week and too many “real” things to do.
I pray that you find yourself able to unplug from the tyranny of the urgent and plug into something important this week and over the Christmas period.
There really is life outside the blinking lights and glowing screens

What’s it all about and who is Alfie??
Posted by: | Comments
If that line means nothing to you then you are simply too young. It is a Burt Bacharach song effectively asking what life is all abotu and what is important.
I was thinking about it as I look out the window at so many people working/walking and living here. The average wage is around $15 a day and 90% of the town in unemployed so their idea of what “it” is all about revolves around anything from food to grog to sex or somewhere to sleep. They are certainly not worried about their investments, politics or a new television.
Yet you can’t sit here for more than 30 seconds without noticing the laughter, the smiles, the warm greetings in the street. These people are a lot more happier than anybody I know in New Zealand or Asia. They have found their “it”. And it is to enjoy today, because there may be no tomorrow and tomorrow will have enough problems.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying we should all adopt this, far from it. Cultures come with their own blessings and curses. But what we can, should, MUST do is find OUR “IT”.
What will make you smile today, what will make you feel fulfilled about your life right now, today.
Sometimes you have to look at those least able to offer us anything to see what we most need!
And to hear one of the worlds finest voices singing Alfie……..
