Life as it used to be

My computer charger died on the 13th December. By the 14th I was powerless and internetless (?) till yesterday.
After panicking about how life would continue without being online I discovered that life did indeed go on. And in fact life was a lot less busy and I had time to think, connect with people and be creative in ways that I hadn’t remembered doing since my teens.
It was quite revelatory how different I felt and thought. We really have become slaves to the machine with our laptops, ipads and smart phones.
My Xmas newsletter will now have to be my new years newsletter as I have been unable to prepare anything meaningful due to my power outage and now that I am back online I simply have too many people to talk to this week and too many “real” things to do.
I pray that you find yourself able to unplug from the tyranny of the urgent and plug into something important this week and over the Christmas period.
There really is life outside the blinking lights and glowing screens

What’s it all about and who is Alfie??

If that line means nothing to you then you are simply too young. It is a Burt Bacharach song effectively asking what life is all abotu and what is important.
I was thinking about it as I look out the window at so many people working/walking and living here. The average wage is around $15 a day and 90% of the town in unemployed so their idea of what “it” is all about revolves around anything from food to grog to sex or somewhere to sleep. They are certainly not worried about their investments, politics or a new television.
Yet you can’t sit here for more than 30 seconds without noticing the laughter, the smiles, the warm greetings in the street. These people are a lot more happier than anybody I know in New Zealand or Asia. They have found their “it”. And it is to enjoy today, because there may be no tomorrow and tomorrow will have enough problems.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying we should all adopt this, far from it. Cultures come with their own blessings and curses. But what we can, should, MUST do is find OUR “IT”.
What will make you smile today, what will make you feel fulfilled about your life right now, today.
Sometimes you have to look at those least able to offer us anything to see what we most need!
And to hear one of the worlds finest voices singing Alfie……..

It’s all relative, relatively speaking.

I was sitting in a tiny town in Fiji yesterday talking ot a local food shop owner. Surprisingly the conversation turned to business and my friend bewailed the unfair tax treatment of the current government and the fact that his feasability studies showed it was almost impossible to remain profitable.
This would be normal in New Zealand but if you could see where I was it was most unusual. My friend has probably never been to school and this “business” is just above a subsistence income.
Yet this man was smart enough to learn what he needed to to try and make his business successsful in his terms. I was incredibly impressed that in such a hard place, uneducated, corrupt and crippled by class issues he was running a professional sophisticated business. Just goes to show you can’t judge any book by it’s cover or classification.
BTW I had a cup of tea, 2 amazing samosa and 2 bhajia at his shop for the exorbitant cost of $1:40 NZD. Would have paid twelve bucks in NZ without thinking about it
.
So if an uneducated, disadvantaged, poor yet intelligent person can start and run a business in Fiji against all odds, what stops you from achieving your dreams??

Have You Eaten?
Posted by: | Comments
I am still in Singapore and as I get used to the culture the differences from the West in thinking become more and more interesting.
Most of Asia loves a good feed but I noticed on this trip that even in business meetings the welcome wasn’t “Hello how are you?” but more typically, “Hello, have you eaten?”
Last night I was walking around at midnight and the streets were filled with people at cafe’s eating when us kiwis would largely be asleep.
It is Singapore National Day today as they celebrate their independence. It is an incredible testimony to the founding leaders what they have achieved in under 50 years. Starting from basically nothing Singapore has over taken it’s “parent” Malaysia and become a financial powerhouse eclipsing Malaysia for standard of living, education and planning. When it sinks in that this is a 45 year old nation it is unbelievable what they have achieved.
Interestingly when I was at a church here on Sunday they spent time praying for the nation and their leaders. And they celebrated being Singaporeans and how much they loved their country. I wonder how much this support of their own nation has propelled them to a place of significance so quickly.
When was the last time you heard a group of kiwis saying how great New Zealand was, how much they loved their country and supported their leaders?? No I can’t remember either
.
Singapore is far from perfect but boy we could learn a lot from parts of their culture!
So Happy National Day Singapore!!

Action Takers
Posted by: | CommentsHad a wonderful evening inspiring a bunch of investors in Invercargill last night.
But the best part was listening to their stories of that they are doing right now. Converting schools to flats, buying land and developing it to cope with rental demand, industrial subdivisions, you name it, they are doing it.
Maybe it’s something they put in the Southland water that enables them to ignore the doom and gloom and simply get on with creating their financial futures, but whatever it is, it’s great.
I know that we create our own reality so I am not surprised to see people getting such good results in this environment, but it was surprising to see so many people in a small town doing so much.
It just proves that we get the results we believe we can have and take action to achieve.
So here’s to the Mainlanders, thanks for inspiring the inspirer

Posted by: | CommentsThe wedding.

Her name is Katie Kirkpatrick, 21 yrs old. Next to her is her fiance Nick, 23.
This picture was taken prior to their wedding January 11th, 2005.
Katie has terminal cancer and spends hours in chemotherapy.
Here Nick awaits while she finishes one of the sessions…

Even in pain and dealing with her organs shutting down, with the help of morphine,
Katie took care of every single part of the wedding planning.
Her dress had to be adjusted several times due to Katie’s constant weight loss.

An expected guest was her oxygen tank. Katie had to use it during the ceremony and reception.
The other couple in this picture is Nick’s parents, very emotional with the wedding and to see their
son marrying the girl he fell in love when he was an adolescent.

Katie, in a wheel chair listening to her husband and friends singing to her.

In the middle of the party, Katie had to rest for a bit and catch her breath.
The pain does not allow her to stand for long period of time.

Katie died 5 days after her wedding. To see a fragile woman dress as bride with a beautiful smile
makes you think… happiness is always there within reach, no matter how long it lasts…..
lets enjoy life and don’t live a complicated life. Life is too short.
Work as if it was your first day.
Forgive as soon as possible.
Love without boundaries.
Laugh without control
and never stop smiling.
