Your spirit and mental health
By
I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t talk about the spiritual aspect of mental health as part of this current series.
For the last week we have been looking at faulty belief systems and the emotional and behavioral damage that results. Many times we can see healing and growth in our lives through the methods I am outlining for you.
However sometimes the problem is a spiritual one and that requires a spiritual solution.
I don’t know where you get your “truth” from but when it comes to spiritual matters I find the Bible to be an infallible source of truth.
What we learn from there is that we inhabit a body that we carry round, but our body is not “us”.
We are made up of 2 additional parts, a soul and a spirit.
Our soul consists primarily of our mind, will and emotions and is something we share with animals. The difference between a plant and a dog for example is that a dog has a soul, has an ability to feel fear and pleasure or decide whether to come or not when called.
But the thing that separates us from our dog is that we have a spirit.
Our spirit is what makes us different to the next person. Our spirit is where our personality comes from. It is also the only part of us that is able to communicate with God and enables us to have a relationship with Him.
And our spirit is where we often get wounded badly. The Bible teaches us that our spirit can be crushed and broken, wounded and dulled.
Proverbs 17:22 and 18:14
The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness,
But who can bear a broken spirit?
A merry heart does good, like medicine,
But a broken spirit dries the bones.
So God is teaching us that a damaged spirit can be literally unbearable. Many, ( if not all) suicide attempts are caused by broken spirited people not knowing where to find healing. We also learn that a wounded spirit can “dry up our bones”. I believe this means we become brittle and lose our strength in life, our vitality and love of life. However I also believe it means we can get physically sick through spiritual damage.
Do you see why this spiritual dynamic is so important to understand. If you have an uncontrollable bad habit and you keep trying to fix your mind when what is wrong is a damaged spirit, you will eventually, literally go crazy.
Or what if your asthma or arthritis was created through a spiritual wound, drugs won’t ever heal that.
So as we go forward in this series I will sometimes reference a spiritual solution where it is relevant because it is truth and it works.
So to recap, you ARE a spirit being with a capacity to relate to other spiritual beings and God. Who you really are comes from and is in your spirit.
Secondly you have a soul which “manages” your mind , will and emotions. Your soul and your spirit are so closely joined that only God can separate them, but they are different.
And lastly you carry these around in your body.
Good mental health is about ensuring that all 3 parts of you are in harmony with each other and God!!
